Bedlignton Terrier Judge Mrs Linda Gent (Fraxinella)
It was an honour to judge the BTA Open Club show and a big thank you to the committee members who worked hard throughout the day to make it an enjoyable day for all.
As I retired from showing 12 years ago and not judged for a while I hadn’t seen any of the exhibits before so it was quite refreshing.
I was pleased to see the breed had improved with regard to substance and very few exhibits were lightweight and shelley. Movement has also improved since I last judged.
A few points to address in the breed would be ears getting a little too large and thick. Also wide fronts seem to be creeping into the breed. The topline in some exhibits was not to the Standard, the Bedlington should have a natural arch over the loin which is aesthetically pleasing but also a necessity whilst working underground. Quite a few dogs and bitches were carrying their tails higher than I prefer. Again the Bedlington is a sporting terrier and I do like to see a bit of spirit but it’s not to be encouraged in the show ring, difficult I know.
